Ceiling height compounds this: every additional foot of ceiling height above 8 feet increases the distance between the fixture and the occupant, reducing the illuminance at floor level according to the inverse square law. As the Mike Holt Forum's licensed electricians advise on high-ceiling recessed installations, "lumen output is only part of the equation — how the light is distributed, color temperature, customer preference, and the spacing between the lights" all affect the perceived brightness result. For ceilings above 9 feet, add approximately 25 percent to the IES lumen target to compensate for the additional fixture-to-floor distance. XHLUX
